The movie begins with a bustling scene at the Vatican, where the administrative head of Vatican Radio hurriedly submits the Eurovision form online, accidentally selecting the Vatican as a participating country for the 2029 Eurovision Song Contest. Meanwhile, the EBU board receives a surprising application from the Vatican.
The Vatican Radio board gathers to discuss the accidental submission. The Pope joins the meeting, addressing the board for the first time about the situation.
Pope Francis: (in Latin, translated by a cardinal) "Brothers in Christ, our church faces significant challenges in attracting our younger generation. Let us not miss this divine opportunity to connect through a mere technical problem. We are here, placed by God’s hand into the world’s largest stage for music and culture. Perhaps this is providence!"
The board looks shocked. Cardinals exchange worried glances, unsure if they should proceed with this unexpected opportunity.
Board Chairman: "Holy Father, surely this was a mistake... Eurovision is a secular event. Do we really believe this is our place?"
Pope Francis: (with a smile) "Perhaps that is exactly why we are needed." (He gestures broadly to the room.) "Let us call for a national selection, inviting all faithful to submit songs that could inspire Europe. The selection will be made openly, and we shall choose the best to represent the Vatican."
Måns Zelmerlöw: "I’m Måns Zelmerlöw."
Petra Mede: "And I’m Petra Mede." (The audience applauds.)
Måns Zelmerlöw: (with a smile) "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to Stockholm for Eurovision 2029!"
Petra Mede: "What a journey it’s been! Remember last year in Tirana, Albania? Linnea Kallström soared to victory with her stunning performance of 'Beyond the Horizon.' Tonight, we bring that magic back to the stage as she opens our show!"
Måns Zelmerlöw: (Surprising Petra with his flawless Albanian) "Faleminderit, Tirana!"
Petra Mede: (Taken aback) "Wow, Måns! Fluent Albanian... You've been practicing!" (Audience laughs)
Linnea Kallström takes the stage, delivering a powerful and emotional performance of her winning song "Beyond the Horizon," captivating the audience with her voice and stage presence.
The semifinal opens with a 10-second countdown from the audience, followed by a flashback to the 2028 contest in Tirana, Albania, showing a brief moment where Sweden scored 12 points. The theme "Up and Beyond" is displayed on-screen with the Swedish Eurovision logo.
Hosts Måns and Petra introduce themselves and welcome the audience. The televote procedure is explained in English and French. The running order for the semifinal entries is shown, and the competition begins.
